Synopsis

Original Sin is a movie directed by Michael Cristofer released in 2001, teaming romantic drama with a hint of mystery. The movie is based on a novel by Cornell Woolrich called Waltz into Darkness. The action takes place in Cuba in the 1900’s, allowing the movie to include themes of devotion, deception, and self-realization within the complex plot.

Luis Vargas is by far the most important person in the movie. He is a Cuban entrepreneur who enjoys plenty of success and wealth in business, but finds himself lacking on a personal level. Luis, who is in search of a companion, started a correspondence with a woman who later became his overseas wife. Many men with a similar stature to him would do the same as a means of brushing shoulders with women outside of their social circles.

Upon Mrs. Julia Russel, his wife from Delaware touched down in Cuba, Luis was in for a surprise. Julia was far more than the modest, dull woman that she herself has described in the letters. Instead she was extremely beautiful, elegant, confident, and captivating. Though surprised, Luis was smitten. From the outside, their marriage was filled with passion and promise and Luis had more than what he had hoped for.

As time passes, Julia’s behaviour starts to raise some eyebrows. She appears to be rather cagey, keeping certain matters concerning her past history vague, and her behaviour from time to time does not match the image she likes to present. Luis is aware of Julia’s troubling side, yet, he is increasingly more captivated by her. He is in a dilemma, caught between the two opposing forces of affection and suspicion, spellbound by her charm yet puzzling over the bizarre feelings she brings about.

The situation becomes more complicated with the introduction of private investigator, Walter Downs. He cautions Luis that Julia is not who she is purported to be and that she may harbor ulterior intentions. This starts off a new tangent, a more complex series of Luis’s collusion that interrogates Julia’s complexion and the nature of their bond.

The multiple layers that the film presents is what makes Original Sin captivating. It is not solely about romance, but the intertwining of contradiction: the thin walls separating reality from falsehood, trust from treachery, and affection from fixation. The core of the film is centered around the enigma that is Julia, and the extent of which is illustrated by Luis’s desire to follow her, in contradiction to the forecasts, his own uncertainty, and the directions of others, shines a light on the heights love is willing to climb, when bound by layers of deception.
